About registers
What a register is
A register is your record of one kind of thing. Swish has four, and between them they cover your
whole financial position.
| Register | What goes in it | The value Swish tracks |
|---|---|---|
| Asset | Property, vehicles, investments, KiwiSaver, savings, valuables | Current Value |
| Liability | Mortgages, personal loans, credit cards, hire purchase | Loan Amount |
| Insurance | Life, health, house, contents, vehicle, income protection | Sum Insured |
| Business/Trust | Companies, trusts, partnerships you have an interest in | Business Value |
Each thing you record is a register item. Your house is one item in Assets; its mortgage is one item
in Liabilities; its house insurance is one item in Insurance.
Together, your Assets minus your Liabilities give your net worth — which is what the Investment
Dashboard shows you.
Getting to your registers
Open Registers in the sidebar and choose Asset, Liability, Insurance, or
Business/Trust.
All four work the same way, so once you know one you know them all.
The register screen

Summary cards
Along the top: your Total Net Worth, and the total value of this register — Total Assets,
Total Liabilities, and so on.
Search and filter
Search filters as you type. The All Categories dropdown narrows the list — tick as many
categories as you want, and the button shows how many you have chosen.
The items table
Your items, grouped by category. The first and third headings are named after the register you are in:
| Column | Shows |
|---|---|
| Asset Name | The item's name — Liability Name, Policy Name or Business Name elsewhere |
| Category | Which category the item is in |
| Current Value | Its value — Loan Amount, Sum Insured or Business Value elsewhere |
| Linked Items | Other register items it is connected to |
| Actions | The ⋯ menu |
On a phone the Linked Items column is left out so values show in full; open an item to see what it is
linked to.
Items you saved partway through are tagged Draft.
Long categories collapse after four items. See More (N more) and See Less expand and collapse
them. If a search or filter finds nothing, you will see No results found.
The ⋯ menu
On each row, named after the register you are in:
- Edit Asset — reopen the item's form
- Delete Asset — remove it, after confirming ("This action cannot be undone")
Important Alerts

Anything needing attention in this register — such as a valuation update, an insurance renewal, or a
mortgage fixed term ending. Each alert starts with the name of the item it is about and provides the
next action. Select the action to update or review the item.
If nothing needs attention: No important alerts at this time.
See Reminders and notifications for how to set these.
Adding an item
The + Register New … button — Register New Asset, Register New Policy, and so on. See
Adding a register item.
What each register is for
Assets
Everything you own that has value. Property, vehicles, KiwiSaver, shares and managed funds, savings and
term deposits, and valuables like jewellery, art, or a boat.
Link the bank accounts. A savings account linked to a savings asset keeps itself current.
Liabilities
Everything you owe. Mortgages, personal and car loans, credit cards, hire purchase, student loans.
Record the terms, not just the balance — interest rate, fixed-term expiry, repayment amount. That is
what lets Swish warn you before a fixed term rolls over, and what the mortgage calculators work from.
Insurance
Every policy you hold. Life, health, house, contents, vehicle, income protection, and any business cover.
This is where reminders earn their keep. Set a renewal reminder on each policy and Swish tells you
before it lapses or auto-renews at a price you have not reviewed.
Business/Trust
Companies, trusts, and partnerships you have an interest in. Record your shareholding or interest and the
entity's value.
Link business accounts here, not to personal assets, so your personal budget stays clean.
Linked items
Register items connect to each other. A house links to its mortgage, its insurance, and the trust that
owns it.

Why it is worth doing:
- You see the whole picture. Open the house and see what is owed on it and how it is insured.
- Equity makes sense. Value minus what is owed against it.
- Nothing gets missed. Insurance linked to the property it covers is harder to forget.
- Navigation is quick. Select a linked item to jump straight to it.
Set links when you create an item, or add them later. See
Viewing and editing items.
How much detail?
More detail means more useful reminders, better calculations, and a more accurate picture — but a rough
entry is far better than none.
Start with: what it is, what it is worth, and any date that matters.
Add later: policy numbers, interest rates, providers, documents, notes.
You can reopen and extend any item whenever you like.
